Quick and secure transmission of electronic export information for US exports

Who needs Automated Export System (AES)

Automated Export System (AES)

The Automated Export System (AES) helps exporters file their Electronic Export Information (EEI) with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) quickly and securely. It is a nationwide system operational at all ports and for all methods of transportation. Submitting EEI, along with applicable licenses, permits and exceptions, to the CBP and the US Census Bureau are required for trade control and statistics. Most commercial goods valued at US$2,500 or more exiting the US and going to countries other than Canada require an EEI filing. It is also required for all exports that require an export license from the US Commerce or State Departments regardless of value. Goods subject to ITAR but exempt from licensing requirements regardless of value or destination must be filed through AES.

Exporters, authorized agents, and other trade participants with an ACE Exporter account can immediately start preparing and submitting EEI filings in AESDirect or self-developed/third party AES software service provider.

How to get started

How does it work?

  1. The exporter makes shipping arrangements (booking) with the carrier. The exporter files EEI using AES. This information can come directly from the exporter or through a service center or port authority.
  2. AES validates the data against editing tables and US Government agency requirement files and generates a confirmation message or error messages back to the filer. If the carrier is participating in the Vessel Transportation Module, the carrier transmits the Receipt of Booking message when the booked cargo is received and the departure message following the actual departure of the vessel.
  3. Within ten calendar days after departure, the carrier will transmit the entire export manifest electronically using AES.
  4. AES validates the transportation data, and then generates either a confirmation message or an error message. Any errors messages generated by AES must be corrected.
  5. The system returns an Internal Transaction Number (ITN) as confirmation that you successfully filed your export documentation.

Note: CBP will hold food shipments if there is no proof that the importer has filed a Prior Notice with the FDA. We recommend having food shipments cross the border during FDA business hours to allow for inspection at the port of arrival.
